My Perfect Console

Going back and forth from the 2 major consoles (sorry Wii, you don't count)... I find pros and cons in each one.  There is no perfect console for me.

They just can't ever be friends.
So if I was able to build my own... taking features I like from Xbox 360 and PS3, here's what I want:

Online gameplay from Xbox 360:
Microsoft saw that social gaming was the future, and they were right.  I hear Sony fans boasting about how PSN is free but anyone who has played both consoles can see the difference.  Having a paid service equals stability and quality online gaming.  Inviting people into your game is an easy process through the Xbox guide button.  PSN online service goes down quite often while Xbox Live being down is a rare occasion.  Cross game voice chat is also very nice to have.  Xbox 360 beacons I could do without but I'm sure it works well for people who use them. Click here if you're not sure what a beacon is.

Console interface from PS3:
I love ads.. don't you love ads?  I love starting up my console and seeing ads on each tab when trying to scroll and find what I want.  Okay not really.  This is something I appreciate about the PS3 is the super ad-free and clean interface.  The themes are actually worth using!  Simple as it should be.  It's easy to find what you want.  I think Microsoft tries to be too flashy and ends up being bloated.  Yes there are ads in the Playstation Store... keyword, store.  Store means I want to look at things to potentially buy.  I don't like them getting in the way when trying navigate my UI.

Controller from... well both?
I'm a bit torn in this department.  I prefer the controller from Xbox for shooter games, the triggers are much better to use than the Playstation shoulder buttons.  I also like that you can change the batteries in the Xbox 360 controller.  If the battery dies in the PS3 controller, you either have to be really good at tinkering or willing to dish out $50 bucks for a new one. (I'll pass on using the USB cable)
As for the hardware itself, PS3 controllers are more reliable.  I have gone through several Xbox controllers and still using my original PS3 controllers.  The thumbsticks tend to wear out while PS3 hardware stays in top shape.
I also find it awesome that PS3 controllers come in many colors.  Xbox 360 tends to have just black with a slash of a few special edition colors here and there... BUT you can switch out the Xbox controller into many different colored shells for more customization.  You cannot do that with a PS3 controller, it's not very friendly to being dismantled.

Region free gaming from PS3:
I do love the fact that blu-ray games are region free... any game from any country will work on any PS3 console.  Xbox uses the DVD format so for one example, if you want to play Japanese games in the US, you will need* a NTSC-J region console.
*not all games are region restricted, just most of them

Loading times and installing games from Xbox 360:
When you boot up a new game on the PS3, it's either a mandatory install or you have to play the game off the disc.  For Xbox 360, you have the choice to do either.  I install all of my Xbox discs to ensure faster loading times and less strain on the hardware having to spin the disc constantly.  I really wish PS3 gave me the option to install games if I choose to.  The PS3 laser is quite noisy and grates on me after a while, almost as bad as a ticking clock.  Just be quiet already!  Even with an installed disc, the Xbox 360 has faster loading times which I appreciate.  The blu-ray disc has slower loading times.  Playing Kingdoms of Amalur, I can tell the difference when I turn in a quest and wait for the next one to trigger, the game takes a noticeable amount of time to catch up.

Hard drive upgrading from PS3:
Need to upgrade the hard drive on your PS3?  Buy a larger capacity laptop HDD.  Need to upgrade the hard drive on your Xbox 360?  Well 320GB is the largest that they make.  I do delete my installed games after playing so I don't have too much trouble with lack of space.  Arcade/downloadable games are fun but I don't play many of them, I prefer full retail disc games.  DLC does also add up as I play more games.

System memory from Xbox 360:
Normally I wouldn't even have an opinion of this but thought I'd mention it after playing Skyrim on both consoles.  People blame Bethesda for the problems on PS3 and how it wasn't properly tested... and I agree.  However the fact that it worked great on Xbox shows that the shared system memory wins over only having 256MB of RAM.  Xbox has 512MB of shared memory with the GPU.  While playing Skyrim, the game became very choppy after several hours and required me to shut off the PS3 completely and restart just to smooth it back out again.

The game library of... both?:
Both consoles have unique IPs that are awesome.  From what I've noticed, Xbox has fewer IPs but more of them (sequels) and PS3 has a larger selection of unique IPs.
Sony has a lot of good JRPGs that I'm interested in playing and Xbox has some great shooters.
My favorites on PS3: Heavy Rain, Atelier series, Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll, Back to the Future
My favorites on Xbox 360: Gears of War 3, Viva Pinata, Halo Reach, Fable 2, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey
On PS3, I haven't played God of War, Resistance, or Uncharted so I can't put those on my list, but I hear good things about all three.  I still need to check out Alan Wake and Fable III for Xbox 360.
E3 got me excited for Dance Central 3 on Xbox 360 but the winner of the show was clearly Sony with Beyond and The Last of Us.

Achievements from Xbox 360:
Achievements are fun.  Trophies are fun.  I do appreciate that Microsoft has a no cheating policy for achievements and anyone found in violation will have their gamerscore reset back to 0 or even banned.  Sony doesn't police their trophies and cheating goes unpunished.  This goes back to the benefits of having a paid service.  There are gamesavers and cheaters all over eBay "selling" PS3 platinums so you can boost your trophy level.  Pretty sad.  Yeah but they're just achievements/trophies, right?  These companies decided to implement these reward systems so they should do their best to maintain them.  Plus I like that Xbox updates achievements immediately online, no need to sync like you do with trophies.  However I do like that a platinum trophy reflects game completion, those are fun to see. :)

Motion gaming of... I don't know yet.
I used to despise motion gaming.  My Wii just collected dust and the thought of adding that type of gaming to PS3 and Xbox made me cringe.  After sitting around so much during the day, I decided to get a Kinect for exercising and easy gamerscore.  My bf and I aren't very outdoorsy people.  After actually using it, I understand why some people like it.  It works well for dance and fitness games.  I still don't like it invading other games like Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim.
As for the Move, I haven't tried it yet so I can't compare the two (yet).  I bought a Move bundle from Amazon but I have lack of motivation to even hook it up right now.  There are fitness and dance games which look unique and interesting. Although dancing with a weird controller in my hand doesn't sound as fun as Dance Central.  Wonderbook looks pretty awesome though, I'm very curious about it.
Kinect has a larger library but the Move is supposed to be way more accurate.
After testing them both, I will write up a detailed comparison.

All in all.. there is no perfect console... they are special in their own ways and I'm glad to play games with both.

I'm very curious what the next generation will bring... what gets improved, what stays the same, what gets broken?  Guess we have to wait!  I'm in no rush for next generation of consoles though... but that's a different topic to discuss.  :)

(I wrote this when pretty tired at 2am, so I apologize in advance for any errors.)

  1. My thoughts - not intended to be confrontational:

I can't say that online gaming has ever been a terribly large draw for me or anyone I know on the consoles. I've played a couple of my games online - notably Bioshock 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Neither of these lasted more than a day. It seems like unless you're really interested in being competitive with other people, then it's not worth having to deal with all the asshats and immature assholes calling people "noob" or just generally being douche-bags. If you had a group of friends that you could play with at regular times, this might be different. That's likely why MMOs are so popular.

Achievements mean just exactly as much to you allow them to. For me they mean nothing, but can sometimes provide a moments diversion when they have a particularly witty or funny name.

I can't stand the xbox controller - it feels too big and bulky.

I think those are the only points on which we differ.

    1. All of my Xbox gaming buddies see the online gaming as the biggest reason they have an Xbox over the PS3. I don't care for competitive multiplayer so dealing with "asshats" is never an issue for me. Back in the day when I had an original Xbox, my co-workers and I would all pack up our consoles and meet up for Halo LAN parties. It was super good fun. :)

    2. I guess I shouldn't speak for them and say all... but I know it's a big reason we play together.
