2011 Video Game Top Picks

Oh hi bandwagon, nice to meet you!

Yeah I know there are 791731289381290 Game of the Year articles out there (I counted!) so here is my +1.
I'm not an official game reviewer and I haven't played every single game in every category, these are just my personal favorites.
These also aren't reviews... just writing as to why I favor these games.  Enjoy!

Overall Favorite Game

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Available: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

It's not just any game where I can spend over 220 hours playing and not feel one smidge of boredom.
This game is brilliant... and no I'm not being a sheep and loving it because everyone else does.  I made it a point not to read much about it and even cut myself off from all social networks along with most of the internet while I played this game.  Skyrim was spoiler free as possible for me.
Xbox 360 was my platform of choice and glad that I chose it over my PS3 after hearing all of the issues it has.
Sandbox RPGs are probably my favorite genre (next to JRPG turn-based, but those seem to be a dying breed).  Explore, quest, run small errands, craft stuff, crawl dungeons I come discover while just running around, cause mayhem or save the world... you can do whatever you like and it's great fun.  Also, DRAGONS!

Favorite Downloadable Arcade Game

ilomilo
Available: Xbox 360, Windows Phone 7

Now here's a game I bet most of you have never even heard of... yet I'm a huge fan.
Puzzle games have never really been my thing but there something special about this game.
Here's the skinny:  Two best friends (ilo and milo) are separated on each map and it's your goal to solve the puzzle so they can meet up.  The music and visuals are brilliant.  It's also very relaxing (while mind bending on the later more "puzzling" levels) since nothing is timed and you can't die.
Amazing game if you just want something cute, fun and relaxing to play.

Favorite Multiplayer Game

Gears of War 3
Available: Xbox 360

I'm not much into competitive multiplayer... I prefer co-op gaming if I play with other people.
Gears of War 3 took me by surprise this year.  I'll admit that I'm new to the series and found the game to be brilliant.  Amazing campaign story that you can play alongside with up to 3 other people.  There are also several multiplayer options that you can play with your friends and have AI bots fill in the empty spots instead of random people from teh interwebs.  I find that to be much more enjoyable and less stressful.
If you watched me during the first half of my Extra Life marathon... then you'll know just how much I enjoyed playing this with my friends.

Favorite Co-op Game

Portal 2
Available: PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3

I loved the first Portal game so the look on my face when my boyfriend brought home two copies of this game = priceless.
After we each completed the single player campaign, we dove into the co-op mode together.  Talk about super fun and excellent teamwork!  We are lucky enough to have our own TV and Xbox so we didn't have to splitscreen the experience.  Communication is key and it was great being able to peek at each other's screen to see what's going on, haha.  Even the achievements were fun to get together.  I would have never guessed that a first person puzzle platformer game with a co-op mode would be so brilliant but Valve pulled it off.

Favorite Innovative Game

L.A. Noire
Available: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

There is something special about L.A. Noire.  I was amazed during every cut scene at how wonderful the face motion capture technology looked in this game.  This is one game that I just couldn't put down from the moment I hit "start".  Not only are the graphics amazing but the rest of the game is very well done.  I love point and click adventure style games so I dove right into the gameplay.  The combat, action sequences and interviews tied everything together nicely.

Favorite Mobile Phone Game
Kinectimals
Platform: Windows Phone 7, iOS

You won't catch me ever owning a Kinect but the phone version of Kinectimals is quite enjoyable.
My super cute cheetah cub was fun to play ball with, jump rope, bathe, water, feed, scratch behind the ears... :D  This enjoyable phone game provided me with several hours of "awww" gameplay.  Fairly easy 200 gamerscore for WP7 as well.

Favorite Achievement Hunting Game
Tropico 4
Available: PC, Xbox 360

When I was in high school, we had to play Sim City in one of my classes (I forget which one).  I also remember not doing very well, haha.  So I never followed the simulation game genre after I became a gamer.  So I had never heard of this series until I saw Tropico 4 during Black Friday deals on Amazon.com.  So I looked up the game and couldn't resist giving a sim game another try.  Don't get the "award" title wrong, I didn't play this game only for achievements... I surprisingly enjoyed this game all the way through.  The achievements in this game were super fun to hunt.  Tropico 3 is on my wish list so you'll probably see that in my gamercard sometime this year.

Well that's my list!  Let me know what you think.  Happy gaming!
