Anyone ever watch "Whose Line is it Anyway"? Ah I remember watching that show with my parents... and of course always hearing, "...the show where everything's made up and the points don't matter."
I think as humans, everyone has a bit of competitiveness in us... some more than others.
Some people like to challenge themselves... some people enjoy collecting things... some people are total completionists... some people like to be recognized with reward... some people enjoy the challenge of doing difficult things... some people just like to compete... some people just like having the bragging rights... So what's your story?
Well here's mine...
I'm a mix of a few of the above... I enjoy games where I collect things... take WoW for instance. World of Warcraft is a game FULL of collectables. You'd be crazy playing that game if you didn't enjoy collecting things. I'd find myself wanting all of the available mounts, reputations, pets, recipes, tabards, crafting resources, titles, armor, and of course achievement points. But why do the achievement points matter? Because they were not only fun to collect but it felt good seeing the notice of the "Achievement Unlocked" notice flash across your screen.... of course followed by the obligatory "Grats" spammed in your guild chat window.
Some achievement points were silly solo fun and some required you to kill a boss in a certain manner while depending on 24 (or 14) other people to make it happen. A fellow guildmate would say "Hey can you help me get this achievement?"... be right there!
So here I am... I have retired from WoW and have moved onto console games.
Xbox achievements and PS3 trophies are fun! I'm not super hardcore about collecting them but I really enjoy doing so. I get a bit of a rise whenever I hear and see an achievement unlock. Why? I like points.
I'm competitive and also enjoy collecting things... so of course achievements appeal to me. It's fun setting goals for myself! Right now, I'd like to get 25k Xbox gamerscore before the end of the month... just because I can.
So go on! Earn those achievements! It's like a mini pat on the back! ^.^
